Slanty

2023 | FIRST Robotics Competition

During the 2023 offseason, the design subteam worked on a robot for the 2023 FIRST Robotics Competition: CHARGED UP. Slanty reaches all parts of the field with a two stage elevator, wrist, and roller intakes capable of picking up cones and cubes.

Project Overview

I designed Slanty as a practice robot for my team to go from 2D robot architectures into 3D parts. The 2023 FIRST Robotics Competition requires robots to pick up cones and cubes from various pickup spots throughout the fields to place on nodes of various levels. At the end of the match, robots gain additional points for docking and balancing on the charge station.

Planning

After sketching out the field elements, there are gridlines that serve as the boundary for the design as according to the game manual. Next, a layer of lines represented each degree of freedom and got preliminary lengths.

Because the purpose of this project was for CAD practice, we prioritized the overarching structure and pieces. To improve the design more, mounting for electronics, more careful measurements for COM, and a more compact wrist gearbox would help make the robot successful on the field.

Results

One of the most difficult parts when designing a robot in a team is integrating distinct mechanisms cohesively. Although the robot was never built in real life, our team learned a lot about linear and rotational mechanisms, roller intakes, and gearboxes. Learning how to design these mechanisms is very important and translated into design decisions during the 2024 CRESCENDO build season.
